SEO for Retail Companies

I provide SEO consultancy for retailers looking to increase visibility, drive ecommerce sales and bring more potential customers into their physical stores.

My approach combines ecommerce SEO with local search, making sure your products and categories can be found by people shopping online while your stores are visible when customers want to buy locally or in person.

    My Approach to Retail SEO

Retail SEO isn't just about ranking individual products.

My approach starts by looking at the whole retail search journey i.e. the products and categories people search for, the brands and attributes that influence their choices, and the local searches that happen when somebody wants to find a nearby store.

The aim is to create as many useful, relevant entry points into your website (and your stores) as possible.

On the ecommerce side, I'll start with the foundations: crawlability and indexability, site performance, product structured data, Merchant Centre configuration and other technical considerations.

But for me, some of the biggest retail SEO opportunities are usually found in the catalogue and category structure.

I'll look beyond broad top-level categories to identify opportunities for more granular categories and subcategories based on product types, brands, attributes and other commercially relevant searches. These become additional ecommerce entry points while helping establish a logical hierarchy around your product catalogue.

For retailers with physical locations, I'll then look at how effectively the website supports local discovery and store footfall. That means making sure individual stores have useful, indexable landing pages, your store finder can be properly crawled and isn't unnecessarily dependent on JavaScript, and your Google Business Profiles are complete, accurate and properly connected with the website.

These two sides shouldn't operate independently. The goal is to create a joined-up retail search presence that helps customers discover what you sell, whether you sell what they're looking for and where they can buy it.

    Ecommerce Categories & Entry Points

For most retailers, category and subcategory pages are some of the most important pages on the entire website.

I'll research how people actually search for your products and compare that with the structure of your catalogue, looking for opportunities to create more granular landing pages around product types, subcategories, brands, attributes and other commercially relevant characteristics.

The objective is to create useful ecommerce entry points for the searches that matter rather than expecting a handful of broad categories – or individual product pages – to capture all of the demand.

    Products & Technical Ecommerce SEO

I'll review the technical foundations that allow search engines and other platforms to properly discover, understand and surface your products.

That includes crawlability and indexability, internal linking, canonicalisation, faceted navigation, site performance, product structured data and Merchant Centre configuration, as well as technical issues introduced by your ecommerce platform, theme or third-party functionality.

I'll also look at product pages themselves, including the quality and uniqueness of product information and how effectively products are connected with their categories, brands and related products.

    Store Finder & Location Pages

For multi-location retailers, the store finder can be a major SEO asset – but only if search engines can actually access what's inside it.

I'll review how your store finder is implemented, ensuring that individual stores have their own indexable URLs and useful location pages, and that links to these locations are available as crawlable HTML rather than being unnecessarily dependent on JavaScript.

Store pages can then be optimised around the information people need when deciding where to visit – while creating relevant local entry points for searches around your products, brand and locations.

    Google Business Profile Optimisation

Your website is only one part of your local search presence.

I'll review your Google Business Profiles, ensuring important business information is accurate and consistent and that individual listings are properly connected with the relevant store pages on your website.

I'll also look at wider local signals, reviews, citations and opportunities to strengthen the relationship between your brand, products and individual locations.

The goal is to increase your visibility across local organic results and Google Maps and ultimately help turn local searches into physical store visits.

I've been working with Darren on a large-scale SEO project over the past several months and have found the experience thoroughly positive from start to finish. He is extremely professional and consistently goes above and beyond to support us. Importantly, he takes the time to patiently explain SEO concepts and terminology to those of us who aren't well versed in the field, which has made the whole process much easier to navigate.

We've already seen fantastic results, including increased impressions, clicks, and organic search traffic. I would highly recommend Darren to any business looking for an SEO consultant who combines real expertise with genuine care for his clients.
